When is 'guaranteed' delivery only an 'estimate'

Bad service does not seem to be the province of just BA. Amazon are at it too...an important item with a 'guaranteed' delivery by 1.00pm the following day. Tracking the order from dispatch it turns out that it is only 'estimated' for delivery on the specified day. So come on Amazon - when is a guarantee of something happening just an estimate of when it might happen?
